Barnsdale Gardens: 10am-4pm every day.  Spring Flower fortnight starts Monday 11 February, but if, like me, you work then head along this weekend to admire the hellebores, snowflakes, daphne and, over the next couple of weeks anemone blanda, dwarf iris and other harbingers of longer days and warmer weather.  £5 entrance fee.

Rutland Ramblers: on Sunday morning 10 February, this friendly walking group will start off from Barrowden for an 8 mile walk.  Contact 01780 460 501 for further information.

Goldmark Gallery in Uppingham: open 9.30am-5.30pm Sat, 2.30-5.30pm Sun.  Paintings by David Kirk go on show.  Oils that explore English places and people, with a Stanley Spencer influence.  Kirk teaches History of Art at Uppingham School, but is clearly also an accomplished artist with several solo exhibitions under his belt in London.  Free.

Pancake Morning in Ketton: this annual event is at Ketton Methodist Church from 10am-12 noon on Saturday 9 February.  Entrance £2 for a pancake and cup of coffee, or tea. There’s also a great cake stall.  (Charity event.)

Shopped! Uppingham’s Shopping History: at Oakham Museum on Saturday from 10am-4pm one of the last chances to catch Uppingham Local History Study Group’s exhibition on retail history through archive photos, advertising posters and other memorabilia.  Free.
