  • The Rutland Cake Company

    The Rutland Cake Company

Congratulations to local baker Naomi Morgan, who has opened The Rutland Cake Company at Oakham Enterprise Park in Ashwell. There was a great buzz at the launch party this week, as family and friends mingled with local supporters, like me, keen to sample the gorgeous cakes! Naomi says she’s been baking since she was a child, and now thanks to her enthusiasm, flair and family support has created a purpose-built bakery and cafe which she... Continue reading

  • Uppingham Christmas Fatstock Show: a great Rutland tradition

Uppingham Christmas Fatstock Show: a great Rutland tradition

If you’re looking for old Rutland traditions, look no further: the annual Uppingham Christmas Fatstock Show is this year held in the town’s Market Place on Wednesday 30 November 2016. This is a unique event, and – so my friend Andrew Leech of local auctioneers & chartered surveyors Richardson tells me – has been cancelled only by the intervention of war and two national ‘foot and mouth’ outbreaks.  It’s unique in being the only event... • Restaurants in Oakham

The line between café and restaurant are very blurred, but rather than make this too lengthy a list of places to eat in Oakham, I’ll focus this summary on restaurants where you’d go out for an evening meal, as well as for a lunch-time gossip with a girlfriend. Oakham has a reasonable mix of restaurant styles, but it certainly lacks a ‘fine dining’ option. Bakers Yard: There’s morning coffee, lunchtime snacks and evening menu including... Continue reading

  • Restaurant Review: The Fox & Hounds Exton

Restaurant Review: The Fox & Hounds Exton

The day dawned cold and sunny after another of Rutland’s wonderful sunrises, and it seemed a good day to get out and do something cheerful. (Mild the winter may have been, but many a morning it has been hard to convince my brain that it is time to get up, it’s been so dark and dank.) So, having heard on the grapevine – via the Great Food Club  – that the Fox & Hounds at... Continue reading

  • Rutland Restaurant Review: The Wicked Witch at Ryhall

Rutland Restaurant Review: The Wicked Witch at Ryhall

The Wicked Witch at Ryhall is definitely a restaurant with a bar, not a pub with a restaurant. Make no mistake: the bar area is very nice, but is not the place to go for a quiet pint. It has an anticipatory atmosphere: a place to salivate over the menu and enjoy a G&T before the main event: the food. We went for lunch recently, on a damp dull day which was cheered no end... • Market Day in Oakham, Uppingham & Stamford

Market Day in Oakham, Uppingham & Stamford

My favourite day of the week in Uppingham (my nearest town) is Friday, because that is market day. There is nothing quite like a small market town on this day, when the whole local community pours in for its weekly helping of fresh food shopping, browsing stalls and – very important this – a good old gossip! The bus will be full (for a change), the car parks bursting at the seams, the coffee shops... Continue reading

  • Rutland Water A to Z

There is so much to do at Rutland Water, and so many sources of information, I have tried to bring them all together in an easy-to-scroll-through A-Z. If I have missed anything , or got something wrong, please contact me so I can correct. ANGLING: Rutland Water offers both trout and coarse fishing, with a variety of permits available. Small boats for angling can be hired from the Fishing Lodge in the Normanton Car Park.... Continue reading

  • lunch at the Lake Isle Uppingham Rutland

    Cafes & Restaurants in Uppingham

There is something to suit every palate and budget in Uppingham. These restaurants are all close to the town centre and are listed in alphabetical order. Choi’s: This long-established Chinese restaurant is at 3 North Street East. The menu includes Malaysian and Thai specialities as well as Chinese favourites. It also offers a take-away service. 01572 820200 Coppergate (formerly Beans): This coffee-shop-plus is always busy, often with teenagers from Uppingham School (but don’t worry, they’re... • Lunch for Even Less in Rutland 2013

Lunch for Even Less in Rutland 2013

Five of Rutland’s best restaurants have got together to offer Lunch for Even Less while the winter days continue. Each restaurant is different; each has a different price point but each offers a great eating experience. All prices are per person and Sunday lunchtimes are ruled out in all cases.  Ask for the Lunch for Even Less menu when you book, and, as always with such offers, it is ‘subject to availability’. The Berkeley Arms... Continue reading

  • Lincolnshire Asparagus: first of the season

I’m a happy woman: my favourite vegetable is in season.  Beautiful English asparagus, locally grown.  I refuse to buy the squat ugly spears flown in from Peru in February, but in May I’ll happily steam my way through bunch after bunch of English asparagus for virtually every meal. As far as I know, no farmer in Rutland grows asparagus, so our ‘home grown’ comes from neighbouring  Lincolnshire, and while Uppingham Market on a Friday has... Continue reading
