Most weekends in Rutland you’ll find lycra-clad cyclists getting out and about, not only on the 25 mile loop around Rutland Water, but along village lanes. Rutland has its own cycling club, called Velo Club Rutland but Leicester and Peterborough cycling clubs also enjoy Rutland’s rural rides.

CYCLING AT RUTLAND WATER: The path that encircles Rutland Water totals about 25 miles, or 17-ish if you omit the ‘spur’ along the Hambleton peninsula.  You share the path with strolling families and dog walkers, so consideration is needed: a time trial route it is not!  Though of course when there are special Triathlon events at Rutland Water, things are diffeent.

You can hire bikes (for all shapes and sizes) from two locations at Rutland Water. As well as hire, with bikes to suit everyone including kids, the centres have a great range of bikes for sale, along with all the accessories a MAMIL could wish for.

  1. Rutland Cycling (01572 332 032) at Whitwell leisure park on Rutland Water’s North Shore.
  2. The Giant Store (01780 720 888)  at Normanton on the South Shore.
  3. Rutland Cycling at Rockblok (01780 460 060) at Whitwell leisure park at Rutland Water.

OTHER RUTLAND CYCLE HIRE LOCATIONS:

Oakham Cycle Centre (01572 757 058) at International House, Barleythorpe Road, Oakham.

Top Lodge at Fineshade Woods (01780 440 899) just over the border into Northamptonshire, at the Forestry Commission site (another outlet for Rutland Cycling).

Please check opening dates/times before setting out.
